In the Spring of 2013, The Indianapolis Museum of Art launched it’s first in-gallery iPad app for the Ai Weiwei: According to What? exhibition. The purpose of the app was to provide greater context for the works on display and aid in the visitors understanding of the artist’s intent.
The app, a TourML driven iPad application, is broken down into four sections: Timeline, Themes, Interviews, and Events & Programs. The app outlines the key events in Ai’s life and the main themes around which the show is centered. In addition, users have access to interviews with Ai, where he speaks about his art, his activism, and his recent experiences with the Chinese authorities. Finally, the app provides a listing of exhibition-related Events & Programs.
The app was built entirely in-house by the IMA Lab with the intention of reusing the general interface and structure for future exhibitions. The open-source TAP tools used to build the app were originally created for use on iPod touch devices and this project was the first iPad implementation.
